Grand Theft Auto IV was released in 2008 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles, and a year later, in 2009, the game was transferred to PC. The main development was carried out by the Scottish company Rockstar North; Rockstar Toronto was responsible for porting.
The enormous cost of creating the game (which, according to some sources, has been in development since 2004) is estimated at $100 million. They paid for themselves on the very first day after release, when 310 million were earned. Within a week, the number of copies of the game sold crossed 6 million, which brought the developers an amount of 500 million dollars.
“Life is difficult. I killed people. Transported across the border. Sold people. Maybe now everything will change,” these words are spoken by the main character Niko Bellic, an emigrant from Eastern Europe in the first trailer for GTA 4. He came to America, to Liberty City, at the invitation of his cousin Roman. In his letters, he described Niko’s luxurious life in a beautiful mansion, with expensive cars and a whole harem of girls, but in reality it turned out that he lives in a small, squalid apartment in an area of emigrants from the countries of the former USSR and runs a taxi service. In addition, Roman has some problems with gambling, and as a result, does not have the best relationships with criminal elements.
GTA 4 departs from the traditional scheme, which consists of increasing the number of different gaming features with each part. The game has reduced the possibilities associated with changing the appearance of the character; there is not such a huge amount of real estate or business functions that were in GTA San Andreas and other games in the series. But all this does not mean that GTA 4 does not have innovative features for the series — they exist (just the ability to use a mobile phone or in-game television), but at the same time the game takes a big step towards realism, getting rid of the fact that According to the developers, it does not fit into the new direction.
The gameplay of GTA 4 is still made in the sandbox style: the player is free to move around the huge city between completing tasks. Tasks often boil down to carrying out various assignments, and, of course, killing all sorts of bandits — a large set of weapons is provided for this.
As already mentioned, the setting of GTA 4 once again becomes Liberty City — the city that most often appeared in the series of games. The authors explain this by the fact that the image in the game of New York, which is the real prototype of Liberty, was never given to them fully. Faced with a huge number of technical problems during the development of 2001's GTA 3, the developers could not even think about bringing New York to life as faithfully as possible. The new game engine RAGE (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) made it possible to do this.
Rockstar was faced with the need to develop a new engine after the licensing policy for the RenderWare game engine, which was actively used by the company, was complicated. RenderWare was purchased by Electronic Arts along with developer Criterion Games, and although the new rights holder maintained the old contracts and agreements, the engine was no longer licensed to third parties for new projects.
To create RAGE, a group of employees was organized, called the RAGE Technology Group, consisting of employees from the Rockstar San Diego and Rockstar North divisions. They have developed powerful technology that supports all current platforms. The graphics of GTA 4 have stepped far ahead compared to San Andreas: the streets of Liberty City are not only approximately equal in scale to the entire state from the previous part, but are also filled with many small details like garbage lying on the sidelines. Water casts glare on the sun and reflects the surrounding world, and a new physics model and advanced animation help make character movements smoother and vehicle behavior more realistic.
There are a little more than one hundred and thirty vehicles in GTA 4: there are cars and motorcycles, trucks and vans, boats and aircraft, except perhaps bicycles. Heading to his destination through the streets of Liberty City, the main character can listen to the radio, which, as usual, is represented by an impressive number of radio stations that play songs of different genres.
GTA 4 had a full-fledged multiplayer mode in which you can, by creating the appearance of your own hero in a special menu, fight in battle with other players via the Internet. However, after 10 years, the online mode was disabled, and it can only be played on PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
In 2009, two official add-ons for GTA 4 were released — The Lost and Damned (the main character is Johnny Klebitz, a member of the biker gang The Lost) and The Ballad of Gay Tony (the main character is Luis Lopez, the personal bodyguard of Tony Prince, the owner of large nightlife Liberty City clubs). Both add-ons not only have new gameplay features, but also their own storylines that complement the story of the original GTA 4.
