PC Gamer Explains Why GTA 6 Exclusivity Could Backfire on Rockstar
PC Gamer has published an article discussing the potential console exclusivity of GTA 6. According to the author Ted Litchfield, the PC platform has long won the platform wars, yet Rockstar remains one of the few major companies that still prioritize consoles.
Rockstar has yet to confirm that GTA 6 will be released on PC, and the journalist found only one explanation for this: the developers are banking on a second wave of sales and players who might theoretically buy the product twice. In the long run, this could harm Rockstar: the PC audience continues to grow, while the console market is dominated by the Nintendo Switch, where Rockstar barely does any business.
Litchfield believes that combined with Rockstar's slowed game development, the company could end up like Square Enix, whose Final Fantasy remakes haven't been very successful for the company. "Rockstar certainly has the opportunity to stop snubbing PC players—a huge market that should be no developer's afterthought—before that happens, but when has long-term growth and stability ever been prioritized over short-term wins in the games industry?" wrote the journalist.
It's worth noting that Obbe Vermeij, former technical director of Rockstar Games, has a different take on this matter. Recently, the developer explained that creating both console and PC versions of GTA 6 simultaneously could negatively impact the game's technical quality.
