Former Rockstar Employee Explains Strange Car Behavior in GTA 4
Former Rockstar Games CTO Obbe Vermeij is back with new facts about the GTA games he worked on in the past. This time, he explained why cars in the fourth part could behave strangely on the road.
One of the social media users asked the developer why some cars on the Algonquin Bridge swerved sharply to the side, as if avoiding a collision with something invisible. He noted that usually at this moment a train was passing on the lower level.
Obbe Vermeij confirmed that cars did indeed dodge the train. He explained that this happens in a certain range of heights and does not take into account what level the objects are at. Roughly speaking, the code considers that the train is driving in the same lane as the car, forcing the latter to swerve sharply into another lane. According to the developer, checking the entire road for collisions would be too slow.
