After the recent announcement of the PS5 Pro, many gamers became curious whether the new console could handle GTA 6 in 4K and 60 FPS. Richard Leadbetter, the technical editor of Digital Foundry, decided to answer this question.

According to him, the GTA 6 trailer shown last year demonstrated game footage from the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, so it can be confidently stated that these consoles can handle the level of graphical detail that gamers have already seen. Thus, the performance of the PS5 Pro will be more than sufficient.

However, when it comes to frame rate, things are much more complicated. When asked whether GTA 6 could run at 60 FPS, he responded as follows: «No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!). The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps,» he explains. «This isn't a GPU problem, it's a CPU problem».

In Richard Leadbetter's opinion, most likely, GTA 6 on the PS5 Pro will have improved visual effects, but the frame rate will remain at a stable 30 FPS.

«Of course, all bets are off if Rockstar is targeting 60fps on the standard PS5 — but we've seen no evidence so far to suggest it is», — added Richard Leadbetter.

The technical editor of Digital Foundry also shared his overall thoughts on the PS5 Pro. The presentation did not impress him much, as nine minutes was extremely short to see all the capabilities of the new console. However, he has high hopes for the Game Boost technology, which, according to Sony, is capable of increasing FPS in over 8.5 thousand games.

Furthermore, Richard Leadbetter does not think that for the price Sony is asking for the PS5 Pro ($700), one could build a PC capable of running games at the same quality. However, the expert considers the price of the new console too high, especially given that it is sold without a built-in drive.

Richard Leadbetter also speculates that Xbox head Phil Spencer likely watched the presentation as well and is unlikely to plan the release of an improved version of the Microsoft console.

«Xbox players already have a great way to play high-end Xbox games — and that's on PC, where the enthusiast has more freedom to pick and choose the kind of hardware they want», — said Richard Leadbetter.

Let us remind you, the release of GTA 6 is scheduled for 2025. By the way, recently, the reputable insider and journalist Jason Schreier refuted the rumor of a possible delay.
