Grammy-winning singer D’Angelo, best known to gamers as the performer of “Unshaken” from Red Dead Redemption 2, has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 51. The musician passed away on the morning of October 14 in New York.
According to sources close to the family and his former manager Kedar Massenberg, D’Angelo had been undergoing treatment for several months, though he had not spoken publicly about his illness.
D’Angelo rose to fame with his debut album “Brown Sugar” in 1995 and collaborated with artists such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Q-Tip. Over his career, he won four Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for “Voodoo” (2001) and “Black Messiah” (2016), as well as honors for the tracks “Really Love” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”
The music video for “How Does It Feel” became iconic, cementing D’Angelo’s reputation as one of the most influential soul singers of his generation.
Last year, musician Raphael Saadiq revealed on the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast that D’Angelo was working on a new album and was very excited about it.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter. The mother of his first son, singer Angie Stone, died earlier this year in a car accident.
Incidentally, this year also saw the passing of actor Graham Greene, known to gamers for his role as Rains Fall, chief of the Wapiti tribe, in Red Dead Redemption 2.
