Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that development on the remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is moving forward as planned, despite the recent departure of CEO Tero Virtala. The project, developed in close partnership with Rockstar Games, has been in full-scale production for over 15 months.
Around 200 specialists are working on the remakes, and according to Remedy’s internal estimates, the remaining production cycle could take another one to two years. After the main development wraps up, the team plans to spend about six months on closed testing. If the current pace is maintained, the remakes could be released by the end of 2026.
Markus Mäki has been appointed as Remedy’s interim CEO. He noted that the studio’s main focus is currently on three key areas: the Control series, Alan Wake, and the Max Payne remake.
“Majority of our effort goes into working with our established franchises – Control and Alan Wake. We’re focused on the Max Payne 1&2 remake with Rockstar Games,” Mäki commented.
According to the Q3 2025 financial report, Remedy’s revenue dropped by 32%, from €17.9 million to €12.2 million, mainly due to a decrease in contract work. However, the main sources of income remained royalties from Alan Wake 2, sales of Control, and funding for the development of Max Payne Remake and Control 2.
Currently, the studio is working on several projects:
FBC: Firebreak — Already released, with the team providing post-launch support;
Control 2 — Active development of content, levels, and game mechanics is underway;
New IP — Currently at the concept and ideation stage;
Max Payne Remake — Full production in collaboration with Rockstar Games.
Remedy has set a long-term goal to double its 2024 revenue by 2027. Max Payne Remake and Control 2 are expected to be the main growth drivers.
The company has promised to share new details about the cult neo-noir shooter remake after publishing its Q4 2025 financial report, expected in late January 2026.
