Rumor: GTA 6 Could Have Had a Darker Storyline With Three Main Characters

According to a new rumor, Dan Houser, one of the founders of Rockstar Games and the lead writer behind GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, wrote three different scripts for GTA 6—but all of them were rejected by publisher Take-Two Interactive. The information comes from insider Fravilys, who has previously leaked accurate details about the RAGE engine.
What Did Houser Propose?
First Version (2014–2016):
- Three protagonists: an aging cop, his drug-addicted son, and the right-hand man of a Colombian drug lord;
- The story focused on the fall of an honest police officer into the world of organized crime as he tries to save his son;
- This version was deemed too dark and was scrapped.
Second Version (up to 2018):
- A female cop from Vice City who goes undercover in the criminal underworld seeking revenge;
- The second protagonist was a crazy drug courier in the vein of Trevor from GTA 5;
- It’s unclear if they were allies. This version was canceled in 2018.
Third Version (briefly in 2019):
- Initially, the protagonist was again a female cop, but she was later replaced by a former African-American soldier recently released from prison;
- This version was also rejected.
After scrapping the previous three concepts, a fourth script for GTA 6 was presented and officially approved by Take-Two Interactive at the end of 2019. The main characters are a criminal couple, with the story inspired by the real-life tale of Bonnie and Clyde. The plot centers on two protagonists:
- Jason—a former soldier who gradually descends into a life of crime. This idea was taken from the third canceled version, but with some changes: he’s not African-American and isn’t fresh out of prison;
- Lucia—a Latina from Liberty City who, in contrast, has just been released from prison.
For reference, Houser took a creative break in 2019 and officially left Rockstar in 2020. He later founded his own studio, Absurd Ventures.
It’s important to note that the information shared by Fravilys has not been officially confirmed, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.
