Grand Theft Auto 5 has officially launched in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, 12 years after its global release. The game has reached Middle Eastern audiences with an age rating of 21+.

Rockstar Games had to agree to such a high age restriction in order to release the game without censorship. For example, casino features, present in GTA Online, are banned in both countries. Only after implementing the 21+ rating was Take-Two Interactive able to reach an agreement with local regulatory authorities to release both GTA 5 and GTA Online. Reportedly, Rockstar and Take-Two aim to maximize market reach ahead of the launch of GTA 6.

Players in Saudi Arabia and the UAE can now legally purchase GTA 5 for PC and consoles, including the Premium Edition. Despite the previous restrictions, the game remained extremely popular among Middle Eastern gamers, who would simply use other regions to buy it.

It’s worth noting that Rockstar recently shut down the Social Club service, possibly in preparation for a new platform ahead of GTA 6’s release.
