Former GTA 6 and RDR Online Developer Criticizes Open World in Games

Former Grand Theft Auto 6 and Red Dead Online game designer Cameron Williams spoke at GDC 2025 (Game Developers Conference) criticizing the overly vast open world in games. According to him, gamers simply get tired of exploring it.
The game designer is sure that the emphasis on action and the need to spend too much time discourages players from exploration. Question marks on the map are also not a panacea, says Cameron Williams. Many players often doubt that the path to the mark will pay off in full, and even experience anxiety. Landmarks can also play a bad role — if there are too many visible points of interest in the open world, gamers simply get lost in it.
We want to avoid creating a possibility space so large that players simply just don't know what to choose
By the way, Cameron Williams is currently working as a game designer at Absurd Ventures, founded by Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser.
Earlier it became known that the former Grand Theft Auto producer will release an online game with an open world. The project received a release window and the first details.
