A police officer is transporting Lee to prison in a patrol car (the circumstances leading to this situation will be revealed to the player a bit later), but gets into an accident, crashing into a walker that has wandered onto the road. After regaining consciousness from the crash, Lee finds the officer dead. Trying to find the handcuff keys, Lee searches the officer's body, but the officer rises and attempts to bite Lee. Lee shoots him with the police shotgun. Still not understanding what has happened, Lee searches for help in the nearest house. He discovers that a little girl lives there, and that her parents have gone on vacation to Savannah, leaving her with a nanny. He also learns that the nanny is already a dead person. Clementine (that's the girl's name) comes to Lee's aid (as the nanny attacks him). With a couple of powerful blows, Lee crushes her skull.

Офицер полиции конвоирует Ли в тюрьму на служебной машине (обстоятельства, приведшие к такому положению, игроку раскроются чуть позже), но попадает в аварию, налетев на вышедшего на дорогу ходячего мертвеца. Очнувшись после крушения, Ли обнаруживает офицера мертвым. Пытаясь найти ключи от наручников, Ли обыскивает тело офицера, но тот встает и пытается укусить Ли. Ли выстреливает в него из полицейского дробовика. Все ещё не понимая, что произошло, Ли ищет помощи в ближайшем доме. Он узнает что в нём живёт маленькая девочка, а также то, что её родители уехали на отдых в Саванну, а её саму оставили с няней. Он узнает также то, что няня уже мертвец. Клементина (так зовут девочку) приходит к Ли на помощь (так как на него напала няня). Парочкой мощных ударов Ли проламливает ей череп.
