TOP 15 Movies Similar to the Red Dead Redemption Series

The Red Dead Redemption duology can be considered the best western in the gaming industry. But it is largely based on films about the Wild West. If you have completed both parts and want to watch a similar cowboy movie, check out our list. In it, we have collected films that are as close as possible to the adventures of Arthur Morgan and John Marston.
The Wild Bunch
The plot of the first Red Dead Redemption is based on the 1968 American western The Wild Bunch. The beginning of the 20th century, the era of the Wild West is coming to an end, and the last thugs go over to the side of the authorities and go against their former accomplices. They, in turn, are trying to hide in Mexico, where the Civil War is raging. All this sounds familiar, doesn't it? Besides, it combines good action with serious drama that makes you think.
Django
The theme of the war with the Mexicans is also played out in the spaghetti western "Django" of 1966. In addition, the main character fires a machine gun, like John Marston, and arranges a shootout right in the cemetery, hiding behind crosses and gravestones. Arthur Morgan behaved in a similar way.
It should be noted that films of very different quality were released under the name "Django". We recommend that you check out the original and the Quentin Tarantino film, which we will tell you about below. You can skip the rest — you will not miss anything.
Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy
This is the usual name for three films by Sergio Leone with Clint Eastwood in the lead role — "A Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". They are considered to be the ones that formed the genre of spaghetti westerns. It is not surprising that the authors of the Red Dead Redemption duology were inspired by these films. For example, during the Dead Eye mode, Arthur and John fired a revolver in an interesting way — they held the trigger and pulled the top hammer. This is how the heroes of Clint Eastwood and Eli Herschel Wallach dealt with enemies.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
At a certain point in the plot of Red Dead Redemption 2, the heroes end up on the tropical island of Guarma. A similar move was in the 1969 western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. True, the heroes found themselves in sunny Bolivia, but its climate was also noticeably different from the usual American Wild West. It is also worth noting that Booty and Sundance made a living by robbing, just like the members of the Van der Linde gang.
Unforgiven
If in his youth Clint Eastwood acted as an actor, then in adulthood he began to make films himself. For example, his Oscar-winning Unforgiven from 1993 is dedicated to elderly cowboys who have to remember the old days and start killing bandits again. Something similar was in the first Red Dead Redemption. And the shootout in the saloon brings to mind the story of Arthur Morgan.
The Quick and the Dead
In the Western duology from Rockstar, the player periodically had to take part in duels. If you are interested in this topic, pay attention to the film «The Quick and the Dead» from 1995. Its plot revolves around duels under the scorching sun. The director was Sam Raimi, and the main roles were played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Sharon Vonne Stone.
Tombstone
Cowboys, a massacre in a Mexican town, shootouts between bandits, gambling and incurable tuberculosis at that time, from which one of the heroes suffers — it seems that we are describing the memorable moments of the Red Dead Redemption dilogy. But all this is in the 1995 film "Tombstone". And although we have before us an action movie in the scenery of the Wild West, it is based on real events.
3.10 to Yuma
John Marston tried to end his life as a bandit and become an ordinary farmer. One of the heroes of the 2007 western «3.10 to Yuma» experienced the desire to break off all business with former accomplices. Also worth noting is the scene of the stagecoach attack, during which the riders caught up with the wagon with valuables, fired from revolvers and sniper rifles, and were fired at from a machine gun. Similar scenes were in both parts of the Red Dead Redemption series.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
This 2007 biographical film is often called an anti-western. Interestingly, the Red Dead Redemption duology is sometimes characterized in a similar way. But we included it in our selection because of the realistic demonstration of a train robbery. Something similar happened in the second part of the Rockstar San Diego western duology.
True Grit
Another western that is dedicated to the long pursuit of bandits in the spirit of the first Red Dead Redemption. It is noteworthy that the game was released in the same year as this film. This time, the Coen brothers (Joel David and Ethan Jesse Coen) showed a standard story for the genre, which holds attention due to colorful characters and beautiful production.
Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film raises many interesting topics. For example, the main characters are bounty hunters who kill criminals. Similar mechanics are present in Red Dead Redemption. They learn about bandits from leaflets and go looking for them, and after successfully eliminating the target, they return to the sheriff's office for the promised reward.
The Revenant
Unlike most Westerns, Alejandro González Iñárritu's 2015 film is set in the cold season. Snowy landscapes and encounters with wild predators are reminiscent of the opening of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Hateful Eight
In Red Dead Redemption, we are sometimes faced with a choice between delivering a criminal alive or dead. A similar dilemma arose for the heroes of The Hateful Eight in 2015. John Ruth, known as the Hangman, preferred to have bandits executed by court order, so he did not kill them personally, but brought them in tied up. Marquis Warren took a different approach — he did not want to take risks, so he delivered the bodies of thugs to the sheriff.
