It Seems the Original Red Dead Redemption Could've Been an Xbox 360 Exclusive
Digital Foundry's latest video (currently available to paid subscribers) reveals that the original Red Dead Redemption was initially planned as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Rockstar initially focused solely on the version for Microsoft's console but later expanded the list of platforms.
According to Digital Foundry, by the time they began working on the PS3 version, the developers had already created at least the map of the game's world. A user named @SynthPotato expressed surprise at this news, especially considering that GTA 4 was originally intended to be a PS3 exclusive.
The video was also commented on by former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij. He noted that it was generally easier to develop games for the Xbox 360, which is why Rockstar initially prioritized that platform. However, Vermeij did not confirm whether the game was ever truly planned to be a Microsoft exclusive.
"The Xbox 360 used DirectX. This means the hardware was hidden behind a layer of software. This made it easy to write for the 360. To get good performance out of the PS3, the developer would have to get very low level. Program the graphics chips in their native language. This was hard and time consuming. This is why it made more sense to lead on the 360 for us," Vermeij explained.
As for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption, it is set to be released on October 29, and pre-orders for the Western are already open.
