GTA 6 GTA 5 GTA San Andreas GTA 4 GTA Vice City GTA 3 Red Dead Redemption 2 Red Dead Redemption Other games Mod Development Miscellaneous

Rockstar Games has been supporting Grand Theft Auto Online with regular free updates for quite some time, which include new features, vehicles, weapons, and even game modes. Some of these add-ons are tied to specific significant dates and holidays, and even have a temporary format — meaning they are automatically loaded and unloaded from the game after their active period ends.

This page collects all updates released for GTA Online since 2013.

Los Santos Drug Wars (December 13, 2022)

GTA Online: Los Santos Drug Wars — an update that introduces a new storyline consisting of two parts. New vehicles, Christmas content, and a new business — a mobile acid lab — have been added to the game.

The update also brought many various improvements that players requested: the ability to hide unnecessary phone contacts from their iFruit phone, launching sales missions from business enterprises from all types of lobbies using Terrobyte, and the ability to complete the storyline missions of the Diamond Casino Hotel solo. Additionally, ray tracing technology was added in the game versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

The Criminal Enterprises (July 26, 2022)

GTA Online: The Criminal Enterprises — an update that expands the gameplay of previously added businesses (offices, nightclubs, motorcycle clubs, and bunkers) and adds a series of missions for the FIB agent.

The update also features gameplay improvements that the player community requested, including a reduction in the effectiveness of the homing missiles of the flying motorcycle Oppressor Mk II, increased payouts in races and confrontations, classic heists, and much more.

Holiday Surprise (from December 19, 2017, and every New Year)

"Holiday Surprise" returns! Rockstar Games strictly adheres to tradition and delights players with a special update during the New Year, which includes a large amount of themed New Year content.

First of all, the entire world of Grand Theft Auto Online is covered in snow. This is not just a replacement of road and ground textures: snowdrifts, icicles, and other ubiquitous attributes of the winter season have appeared all over Los Santos and other places in Blaine County. In addition to this, the sounds have changed as well. In the state of San Andreas, you can hear the howling of the cold wind, and the birds have long flown south to wait out the winter in warmth.

Unfortunately, residents of GTA Online cannot leave, but they can update their already large wardrobe. The developers have added a multitude of festive accessories to the game: bright and warm sweaters, scarves, warm pants. Special holiday costumes and masks stand out, in which you can easily prank your friends by introducing them to "Mr. Cookie" or a humanoid reindeer.

For all the naughty children of Los Santos (read: for all GTA Online players), other masks have also become available — hockey masks and even Krampus masks, the local Christmas spirit.

Doomsday (December 12, 2017)

After several years of releasing updates for Grand Theft Auto, the developers at Rockstar Games suddenly decided to release one more, final heist. Players had even stopped asking for something like this, so the announcement of the "Doomsday" heist had the effect of a bombshell.

Such a strange name was chosen not by chance. Doomsday is not so much a heist as it is a multi-tiered mission with its own unique storyline. The story revolves around a worldwide sabotage involving some mysterious forces. It is impossible to thwart the plans of the hidden enemy through legal means, so the government turned to the gangsters of Blaine County for help.

One of them, our old acquaintance Lester Crest, agreed to work for the good of the homeland. He gathered a team of the most desperate thugs and handed them the most modern toys of the government — next-generation tanks, flying amphibious vehicles, super-modern military helicopters, and even a jetpack that had long awaited its moment in the depths of Mount Chiliad.

Each of the missions in the "Doomsday" heist is a fantastic adventure that has never been seen in GTA before. The developers literally ripped out all the brakes and let their imagination run wild.

"Smuggler’s Run" (August 29, 2017)

Perhaps each of us remembers how Trevor Phillips, one of the main characters of Grand Theft Auto 5, started his entrepreneurial activities in Sandy Shores with just a rattling crop duster. Rockstar Games remembers this too, and that’s why they decided to dedicate the new global update for the online mode of their most successful game to the dubious business of using flying vehicles. Introducing — Smuggler’s Run!

In some ways, this addition to GTA Online resembles the past — Gunrunning, but instead of an underground bunker and running around in camouflage knee-deep in mud, the developers offer to take to the skies, as transporting contraband by plane is undeniably faster.

The update "Smugglers" is dedicated to transporting various not-so-legal cargoes by planes. To get into this dangerous but profitable business, you need to acquire a hangar. Initially, it only comes with a free "workhorse" — Cuban 800. It doesn't even have any weapons, so the first orders will be low-value but safe.

Later, when the novice smuggler builds up some "muscle," they can carry out a whole series of modifications. This primarily concerns the hangar. You can attach additional facilities — an aircraft workshop, extra storage for vehicles, a living room, and even a showroom that you wouldn't be ashamed to invite friends or even competitors to. So they know who they're dealing with!

Much more significant funds can be invested in upgrading the aircraft fleet. This is where the main content of the expansion lies — a huge amount of new vehicles. There are a total of seven: Buckingham Alpha-Z1, LF-22 Starling, Mammoth Tula, Nagasaki Havok, Nagasaki Ultralight, V-65 Molotok, and Western Rogue. This list includes both cargo planes and real fighters.

Rockstar will be adding new models to this list in the following weekly updates. In fact, all upcoming planes are already in the game, just hidden, but experienced modders uncovered the game resources on the day of release and found out that the developers have big plans for summer over the state of San Andreas.

Weapon Trafficking (June 13, 2017)

In mid-June 2017, perhaps the largest update for Grand Theft Auto Online was released — Gunrunning. It added a completely new line of activity to the game, allowing players to start illegal trading in heavy weaponry.

This involves militarized upgrades for civilian vehicles, deadly firearms, and even military equipment. A total of 19 new vehicles were added to the game.

The entry threshold into the dangerous but profitable business of trading death is quite high: to start the business, you need to buy an underground bunker. There are 11 to choose from, differing in equipment, size, and of course, price. The cheapest will cost $1,165,000, while the most expensive will set you back $2,375,000.

After purchasing the bunker, you also need to equip it. Rockstar Games devised a whole technological chain with various upgrades. Each conditional "building" opens up new possibilities. The research headquarters allows you to study new types of weapons and upgrades, while the checkpoint enables missions outside the bunker using a mobile operations center.

Yes, there are also new missions. They involve conducting profitable deals and transporting deadly goods to clients. The enemies are the ubiquitous competitors, as many arms cartels are fighting for a place in the sun, not just one player.

Import/Export (December 13, 2016)

In mid-December 2016, the developers at Rockstar Games uploaded yet another content update to the servers of Grand Theft Auto Online. It is called Import/Export, and it reflects the main essence of the innovations. Now players have the opportunity to make deals with stolen cars in GTA Online by completing missions of two types. The first involves stealing a valuable vehicle right from under the noses of opponents and delivering it to the gang's secure warehouse. Then the stolen vehicle needs to be sold, and for that, another delivery must be made, but this time to the buyer. However, even at this stage, there are difficulties, as the valuable cargo must not be damaged, and other players will surely want easy money and, as a consequence, will try to take the car. Managing this entire import and export process will fall to the heads of the GTA Online gangs — the VIPs. They assign tasks to their subordinates and manage special storage facilities, some of which can hold up to 60 types of vehicles. Speaking of the cars themselves, among them are both simply expensive brands and 8 completely special, rare cars. Each of them is associated with a separate mission designed for cooperation with other gang members.

bikers (October 4, 2016)

The release of this expansion for Grand Theft Auto Online was discussed even before its official announcement, as bikers appeared both in the story campaign of GTA 5 and in the major expansion for the fourth part of the franchise from Rockstar Games. Players received exactly what they had been waiting for all this time — new motorcycles with fine-tuning options, just like with cars, new weapons in the amount of 6 pieces, and specialized "biker" clothing. In addition, the developers added new cooperative missions in which players will unite in motorcycle clubs to complete dangerous tasks. These clubs are informal associations, meaning a player can be part of a gang and be a member of a biker club at the same time. The number of members in a motorcycle club is limited to 8 characters. Changes were made to the existing game functionality: players gained the ability to attack enemies up close by approaching them on a motorcycle. This ability can be used in battles with other players as well as with computer-controlled characters. To learn how to create a motorcycle club and become its president, read our "Biker Guide in GTA Online."

Stuntmen and Tricksters (June 12, 2016)

A large and anticipated update that added stunt races with winding tracks and crazy obstacles to the game. In addition, the developers added 15 new vehicles (sports cars, motorcycles, trucks) and new clothing to the game.

On August 2, as part of the "Stuntmen and Tricksters" update, a stunt race editor was released, allowing players to create their own tracks using new tools that include over 250 new elements, including ramps, pipes, loops, obstacles, and other elements.

Big People and Other Bandits (June 7, 2016)

One of the largest updates for GTA Online, expanding the management features of your own criminal organization introduced in the "Executives and Other Criminals" update. Now players can purchase an office and a warehouse for their criminal enterprise and engage in smuggling deliveries, participating in wars against other members of the criminal community and the San Andreas police.

The update Further Adventures in Finance and Felony also adds new vehicles to the game, including the Pegassi Reaper sports car.

The "Inch By Inch" adversary mode (April 12, 2016)

A new adversary mode "Inch By Inch" was added to the game, where players must break through a hail of enemy bullets to deliver cargo to a safe zone.

Lowriders: Custom Classics (March 15, 2016)

A fairly large update, but don't confuse it with "Lowriders 2"! "Lowriders: Custom Classics" added three new lowriders to the game: Slamvan Custom, Virgo Classic Custom, and Faction Custom Donk, new weapons (a rifle and a shotgun), a new competitive mode "Sumo," where players sit in cars and collide with each other in a deadly showdown on the arena, as well as new tattoos, animations, and a lot of new clothing.

With the release of the update, new lines appeared in the game's source code indicating the upcoming release of new lowriders and new competitive modes that were released later in April.

Additionally, the update fixed a lot of bugs and shortcomings in the GTA Online gameplay.

Valentine's Day (February 2016)

A limited-time event where players can once again obtain content that was previously showcased in the Valentine's Day Massacre Update, as well as a lot of new additional clothing.

Festive Surprise 2015 — Christmas Surprise (from December 21, 2015, every New Year)

Another New Year update. Like other holiday updates, it is time-limited. Players witnessed the return of themed clothing, masks, and various accessories. Los Santos was covered in snow, the trees transformed, and a new Tampa car appeared on the streets, which many of us remember from The Ballad of Gay Tony for GTA 4.

Executives and Other Criminals (December 15, 2015)

A very large update that added a lot of new vehicles and various versions of existing ones, as well as expanding almost all game modes.

First of all, it is worth noting the emergence of organizations that can be created by influential community members. This is somewhat similar to clans with their strict hierarchical structure. Some players are leaders, while others are their mercenaries, performing "dirty" work.

There are also more missions: a new “Extraction” format for Adversary Mode, new events and challenges for Freemode, as well as luxurious clothing sets.

There are also new offerings for the wealthiest players of Grand Theft Auto Online. Now they can purchase premium apartments in the Vinewood hills (the property limit has been increased to five), and even their own super yacht. All of this can be finely tuned to their taste and upgraded for additional money.

Halloween Surprise — Halloween Surprise (October 29, 2015, and every Halloween)

A limited-time addon where developers allowed players to use a flashlight, two new cars (Albany Fränken Stange and the Albany Lurcher), as well as play a new mission “Slasher” and try on scary holiday masks.

Lowriders — Lowriders (October 20, 2015)

The key “feature” of this update was the return of the beloved so-called lowriders — specially tuned cars. The tuning editor received many additional options for fine-tuning hydraulics, engine covers, air filters, upholstery, and interior decorations, and even stereo systems. In addition, the game received another expansion with two new weapons (TEC-9 submachine gun and a machete), two cars (custom versions of Willard Faction and Declasse Moonbeam), deluxe variants of Albany Primo Custom, the Albany Buccaneer Custom, the Vapid Chino Custom, and the Declasse Voodoo Custom. New missions for Adversary Modes, clothing sets, and the ability to purchase a fourth property were introduced.

Freemode Events Update — Special Events in Freemode (September 15, 2015)

A major addon that introduced the functionality of the new Rockstar Editor on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (later became available on personal computers as well). Along with it, a new Freemode Events mode appeared in GTA Online, and various changes were made to other modes aimed at minimizing waiting times on loading screens and intermediate player gathering in lobbies.

Dirty Money. Part 2 (July 8, 2015)

The last update released on last-generation consoles PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Along with it, the game introduced two new weapons (Marksman Pistol and brass knuckles), four new vehicles (Progen T20, Vapid Chino, Invetero Coquette BlackFin, and Coil Brawler), the Dinka Vindicator motorcycle, the Lampadi Toro boat, and, as always, new clothing for the character. All subsequent addons were released only on PC and Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.

Dirty Money. Part 1 (June 10, 2015)

A content update that added a new weapon Coil Combat PDW, four vehicles (Pegassi Osiris, Enus Windsor, Albany Virgo, and Benefactor Stirling GT), deluxe versions of the Buckingham Luxor airplane and the Swift helicopter (with gold paint), and new clothing items.

Heists (March 10, 2015)

A major expansion centered around the online heist mode and enhanced PvP match functionality (the so-called Adversary Modes). Along with this, the Heists Update introduced new weapons (a flare gun), two motorcycles (Dinka Enduro and Principe Lectro), two planes (Jobuilt Velum 5-Seater and Mammoth Hydra), and two helicopters.

Festive Surprise — Christmas Surprise (December 18, 2014)

A limited-time New Year add-on that added two new weapons (a proximity mine and a homing launcher), four new vehicles (Bravado Rat-Truck, Vapid Slamvan, racing versions of Dewbauchee Massacro and Dinka Jester), festive clothing, some of which later became unavailable. Additionally, since the release of Festive Surprise, players have been able to acquire a third property.

Independence Day (July 1, 2014, and every year)

Independence Day was also celebrated in Grand Theft Auto Online as another update from the developers. The game featured 2 new weapons (a musket and a firework launcher), the Vapid Liberator vehicle, and the Western Sovereign motorcycle. Players could also dress their characters in traditional American clothing and give them old-fashioned hairstyles. All of this is also available in single-player mode.

I Am Not a Hipster (June 17, 2014)

Following the popular trend, the developers decided to play on the desire of many players to look like hipsters. Two new weapons (a vintage pistol and a cavalry dagger), 12 new jobs, and seven vehicles.

High Life (May 13, 2014)

As the name suggests, this add-on is dedicated to the lives of the wealthiest residents of the state. New weapon — a bullpup rifle, three new vehicles (Enus Huntley S, Dewbauchee Massacro, and Pegassi Zentorno), and the Dinka Thrust motorcycle. The High Life Update also allowed players to own two properties at once to emphasize their “elitism.” Weapons and other content can also be tried out in the campaign.

Business (March 4, 2014)

Another content expansion that includes two new weapons (a heavy pistol and a special carbine), three cars (Albany Alpha, Dinka Jester, and Grotti Turismo R), the Buckingham Vestra plane, as well as various business attire, strict hairstyles, and tattoos. As in other cases, the main content is available in campaign mode.

Valentine's Day Massacre (February 13 to March 3, 2014)

Another limited-time update, this time themed around Valentine's Day, styled in a vintage gangster fashion. Players received a new weapon (Gusseberg Sweeper, better known as the Tommy gun), the Albany Roosevelt car, and several sets of "old-fashioned" clothing. The weapon and car are also available in single-player mode.

Christmas Gifts (from December 24, 2013 to January 5, 2014)

A limited-time update dedicated to celebrating the Christmas holidays. It added themed festive clothing to the game and covered the game world with real snow.

Capture the Flag (December 18, 2013)

A small addition for the Content Creator, adding functionality for creating missions for another mode — Capture the Flag.

Content Editor (December 10, 2013)

Essentially, this is a mission editor that allowed players to create their own maps for races and the Deathmatch mode.

Beach Bum (November 19, 2013)

Added two new weapons (broken bottle "rose" and a pocket pistol), three vehicles (BF Bifta, Canic Kalahari, and Bravado Paradise), and the Pegassi Speeder boat. The weapons and vehicles are also available in single-player mode (Story Mode). The update has a pronounced "beach" theme and includes themed clothing, tattoos, hairstyles, and jobs.
