Rockstar Games discovered documents show why GTA 3 was meant to be a success

New video on YouTube-channel GTA Series Videos shines light on newly discovered Rockstar Games game design documents. The vid is based on authentic GTA 3 Design Document dated December 29th, 2000 what the studio had used to prepare for E3 2001.

Let's take a look what Rockstar were planning to do with GTA 3.

Rockstar underlined that players are interested in:


  • simple tasks;
  • racing in a fast car and killing people;
  • traveling within comprehensible environment;
  • open world.


    Plans

    The game was set in a modern era for players to immerse faster. It was stated that the game should be developed for wider audience and not only for nerds. Rockstar didn't want to make players to kill innocent people but rather only criminals.

    Developers was interested in implementing:

  • airbags;
  • the ability for civilians to call the police;
  • scenes with cops chasing citizens;
  • animations for injured NPCs.

    The developers cut the following weapons:

  • golf club
  • tire iron
  • machine gun
  • revolver
  • time bomb
  • pistol;
  • uzi with silencer.

    And yeah, Claude was mute from the start.



    Some big features that were cut:

  • purchasing unique cars;
  • special taxi mission;
  • day/night cycle affect the gameplay;
  • different multiplayer modes;
  • split screen;
  • different endings.
