Object 292 is an experimental tank designed by the Kirov Plant Design Bureau (JSC Spetsmash) and scientists of the Transmash All-Russian Research Institute. The prototype was based on the T-80U and its turret. The T-80BV chassis was used with minor modifications, but the T-80U turret was retrofitted with a 152.4 calibre smoothbore gun. The new gun had the same bore diameter as the 125mm, but was considerably longer. The anti-tank capabilities were improved so that the tank could potentially engage and destroy any Western tank of the time at combat range with a single shot.
