Type 56 is a Chinese 7.62×39mm assault rifle. It is a variant of the Soviet AK-47 assault rifles (in particular, Type 3) and AKM. In the Chinese armed forces, the Type 56 assault rifle was designated as the "Type 1956 Sub-Machinegun", since in the early years of service in the PLA, the Type 56 assault rifle played the role of SMG, and not a rifle for infantry. Production began in 1956 at state factory 66, but was eventually transferred to Norinco and PolyTech, which continue to produce the rifle mainly for export.

В китайских вооруженных силах автомат Тип 56 получил обозначение «Тип 1956 Sub-Machinegun», поскольку в первые годы службы в НОАК автомат Тип 56 играл роль SMG, а не винтовки для пехоты.
