M24 SWS (Sniper Weapon System) is a designation given by the U.S. Army to the bolt-action Remington 700 rifle in 1988 when it was adopted as the standard sniper rifle.
The U.S. Marine Corps uses a different version of the Remington 700, designated the M40. The main difference from the rifle used by the Marine Corps is that the Army's M24 rifle has a modified bolt that allows it to fire more powerful cartridges than the M40 fires.
