Beretta 92 (Italian: Beretta 92, also Beretta 96 and Beretta 98) is a family of semi-automatic pistols developed in 1972 by Carlo Beretta, Giuseppe Mazzetti, and Vittorio Valle — experienced firearms masters from the Italian company Beretta. The Beretta 92F, a 9mm pistol, replaced the Colt M1911 .45 caliber as the standard sidearm of the U.S. Army in 1985, designated as the M9. Under the contract, the M9 is produced in Italy (Pietro Beretta) and in the U.S. (Beretta USA Corp., Accokeek, Maryland). From 1985 to 1995, the U.S. purchased 1,020,257 M9 pistols for all branches of the military at a price of $178.50 each.
