California — quest walkthrough in Red Dead Redemption
In this guide, you will learn how to complete the quest of a passerby who is trying to reach California on foot in Red Dead Redemption.
To make the quest appear on the map, you need to complete the quest «Women and Cattle».
First Encounter
You will first meet a man named Sam at this point.
After a short conversation with Sam about his goal to reach the state of California, Marston warns Sam about the presence of dangerous criminals and gangs roaming the area. The man explains that his horse went lame some time ago, and he decides to hire a stagecoach and cheerfully heads into the desert.
Second Encounter
After some time, head to the question mark again to talk to Sam.
Although Marston gives him directions to head west, Sam decides to talk about horses that can solve math problems and eat cacti. Then Marston tells Sam that he needs help if he wants to get to California, but he ignores Marston and sets off again.
Third Encounter
Head to the question mark in the Gaptooth Ridge area again.
Sam has gone mad, his clothes are worn and torn. He tells Marston about his journey and how he will reach California. Marston backs off, and Sam heads into the desert again.
Final Encounter
South of Tumbleweed, Marston finds Sam dead and scavenged by vultures. Search the man and take the letter for his wife. Head to the Armadillo station and send the letter, after which the quest will be considered completed.
