The main differences from its predecessor:
a new 5.45X39 mm caliber cartridge (instead of 7.62x39 mm), which has a more sweeping bullet trajectory, which led to an increase in the range of a direct shot by 100 meters, as well as a lighter one (weight saving of 1.4 kg with a wearable ammunition load of 8 magazines);
a new muzzle brake-compensator, which serves to increase the accuracy of the battle and reduce the recoil energy;
a magazine made of lightweight and durable plastic.
On machines manufactured in 1974-1986, the butt and forend are made of wood. Since 1986, they began to be made of black plastic. On the wooden butt, longitudinal grooves were made on both sides to facilitate the overall weight of the machine. They continue to do so on the plastic butt.

Основные отличия от предшественника:
новый патрон калибра 5,45Ч39 мм (вместо 7.62х39 мм), имеющий более настильную траекторию пули, что привело к увеличению дальности прямого выстрела на 100 метров, а также более лёгкий (экономия массы в 1,4 кг при носимом боекомплекте в 8 магазинов);
новый дульный тормоз-компенсатор, служащий для повышения кучности боя и уменьшения энергии отдачи;
магазин из лёгкой и прочной пластмассы.
У автоматов выпуска 1974 — 1986 годов приклад и цевьё выполнены из дерева. С 1986 года их начали изготовлять из чёрного пластика. На деревянном прикладе с обеих сторон были сделаны продольные канавки для облегчения общего веса автомата. Их продолжают делать и на пластиковом прикладе.
