On October 10, 1956, the first Volga rolled off the assembly line. But even before June 1957, the car was produced with a boosted engine from Pobeda (65 hp) - a total of 1100 cars were produced. In the summer of 1957, the preparation of their own engine was completed. Engine ZMZ-21 - 2.445 liters, 70 hp - overhead valve, with wet liners, lower camshaft, wedge combustion chambers and OHV valve mechanism. In a modernized form, this engine still exists as the ZMZ-402, and the ZMZ-21 itself, produced by the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant, was put on UAZ vehicles in almost unchanged form until the mid-1990s.
