In 1987, a modernized version of the minibus began production, designated RAF-22038. This minibus used units from the GAZ-24-10 car. Externally, the RAF-22038 was distinguished by a front cladding with a new false radiator grille and aluminum bumpers with plastic side sections. On the prototype 22038, demonstrated at the exhibition “The Automotive Industry of the USSR 60 Years”, narrow rotary windows were placed in the rear of the sidewalls, but on the production model the body type 2203 was actually retained. Since 1993, RAF-22039 was produced. This modification was distinguished by increased passenger capacity (thirteen people). This was achieved by reducing luggage space to a minimum. RAF-2203 was the most popular Soviet minibus.
