The 964 is another Porsche car built on a concept proposed back in the 1930s by Ferdinand Porsche himself: a rear-engine layout and an air-cooled boxer engine. However, in addition to the general idea, the 964 became the heir to the classic 911 not only formally, but in fact was its deep modernization to meet new active and passive safety requirements, as well as increasingly stringent environmental standards. The model was developed using modern technologies and designs at that time: computer modeling, durable steels and alloys, permanent all-wheel drive, electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Модель была разработана с применением современных на тот момент технологий и конструкций: компьютерное моделирование, прочные стали и сплавы, постоянный полный привод, электронно-управляемые АКП.
