UFC fights take place in a fenced-in octagon, officially called the Octagon. The SEG originally trademarked the "Octagon" and prevented other MMA organizations from using the same type of cage. But in 2001, Zuffa gave its consent to competitors to use the octagonal cage, arguing that the young sport needed uniformity and universal recognition by the authorities. However, the name "Octagon" remained assigned to "Zuffa", and among the abundance of MMA organizations, only the UFC officially bears the name "Octagon" [85].
The UFC cage is an octagonal structure mounted on a platform 120 cm high from the ground, with a diameter of 9.75 meters and a metal wire fence 165-173 cm high. To prevent cuts, cuts and scratches from contact, a vinyl coating is applied to the metal mesh. The cage has two entrances located opposite each other[86]. The mat, adorned with sponsors' logos, is replaced for each competition.
