Beretta 92 (Italian Beretta 92, also Beretta 96 and Beretta 98) is a family of self-loading pistols developed in 1972 by Carlo Beretta, Giuseppe Mazetti and Vittorio Valle, the most experienced firearms masters from the Italian company Beretta. The Beretta 92F pistol in 9mm caliber was a competitive 1985 replacement for the Colt M1911 .45 caliber pistol as the standard US Army pistol designated M9. Under the terms of the contract, the M9 is produced in Italy (Pietro Beretta), as well as in the USA (Beretta USA Corp., Akkokike, Maryland). From 1985 to 1995, the United States purchased 1,020,257 M9 pistols for all branches of the military at a price of $178.50 apiece.
