The Porsche 911 classic was designed as a more powerful, bigger and more comfortable car to replace the company's first Porsche 356, basically a sporty evolution of the Volkswagen Beetle. The new car debuted in 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was originally designed as the "Porsche 901" (901 being its internal company number). But Peugeot had exclusive rights in France to the names of cars formed by three digits with a zero in the middle. As a result, instead of selling a car with a different name in France, Porsche changed the name to 911. In 1964, the car went on sale, giving customers a worthy alternative to the Jaguar E Tour.
