Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has officially explained his departure from the studio. Previously, fans and insiders had speculated that his exit in 2020 was linked to a conflict with his brother, Sam Houser, and disagreements over the future direction of the company.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Houser said that these theories have no basis in reality, as does the alleged story about poor working conditions or union-related issues. According to him, the decision to leave Rockstar was driven not by internal disputes, but by sheer exhaustion from the scale and complexity of developing massive games.
“Because the projects were really long and tough and take a long time to make. It can be a tough journey getting things at that scale with that many moving parts finished. You’ve got 450,000 lines of dialogue and equal number of parts of other things all trying to assemble itself. It’s this huge production experience. That swallows all of your time for many years at a time and I don’t know if I had another one of those games in me.”
A new wave of rumors emerged after Houser’s recent appearance on Lex Fridman’s podcast, where he gave an evasive answer about his reasons for leaving. This fueled speculation about a hidden conflict within Rockstar’s leadership, especially against the backdrop of recurring accusations that the studio enforces harsh working conditions, excessive overtime, and anti-union practices.
Houser did not directly address these allegations, but made it clear that multi-year development cycles—comparable in stress to creating a new GTA—demand enormous commitment from both developers and management, often at the expense of personal life and health.
Dan Houser was one of Rockstar’s key writers and creative leads, heavily involved in the creation of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series. After leaving the studio, he founded his own company, Absurd Ventures, to pursue new projects.
As for the broader situation around layoffs at Rockstar, it has reportedly drawn the attention of members of the Scottish Parliament.
